Middlezoy Cottages with Hot Tubs
Middlezoy Guide
Middlezoy, a small Somerset village with a population of just over 800, offers a surprising number of holiday cottages with hot tubs. Located near the Somerset Levels, it's a fantastic base for exploring the West Country while having a private hot tub to enjoy after a day out.
The village sits just 7 miles from Bridgwater and 12 miles from Glastonbury. Nearby attractions include Burrow Mump (4.8/5 on TripAdvisor), the Willow and Wetlands Centre (4.6/5) and the Somerset Levels nature reserves where you can spot rare birds.
Middlezoy has an interesting history - King Alfred reportedly hid in the area while fleeing the Danes in 878. The village church of Holy Cross dates back to the 15th century and features unusual medieval carvings that have fascinated historians.
Cottage options range from converted barns sleeping 2-4 people to larger farmhouses accommodating groups of 8+. Many properties welcome dogs and some offer extras like wood-burning stoves, private gardens and countryside views alongside those all-important hot tubs.

Sightseeing
Middlezoy might be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to nearby attractions. The Somerset Levels surrounding the village offer amazing wildlife watching opportunities - I've heard the starling murmurations in winter are absolutely spectacular.
Burrow Mump (TA7 0RB) is a must-visit natural hill topped with a ruined church just 2 miles away. It's free to visit and open daily. The views from the top across the Levels are worth the short climb and it scores 4.8/5 on TripAdvisor.
The Willow and Wetlands Centre (TA7 0RH, open 9:30-5:00 daily) shows how Somerset's traditional willow industry works. You can watch basket making demonstrations and walk through the willow beds. It's got a solid 4.6/5 on TripAdvisor and a lovely café too.
Glastonbury Tor is just 12 miles away and scores 4.8/5 on TripAdvisor. The iconic hill with its tower offers amazing views across several counties. It's free to visit and open dawn till dusk. The hot tub at your cottage will feel even better after climbing it!
Pet Friendly
We've found Middlezoy is great for dog owners. The flat landscape of the Somerset Levels means easy walking for dogs of all abilities. The King Alfred Inn in the village welcomes dogs in the bar area and even offers water bowls.
Apex Park in nearby Burnham-on-Sea (TA8 1LU) has a dedicated dog exercise area where your four-legged friend can run off-lead. There's also a lake and plenty of paths for on-lead walks.
Many of the beaches within 30 minutes' drive have seasonal dog restrictions, but Brean Beach (TA8 2RS) has sections that allow dogs year-round. Just check the signs when you arrive.
If you're bringing a dog to your hot tub cottage, I'd recommend packing towels specifically for them - the Somerset Levels can get muddy after rain and nobody wants a mucky dog jumping in the hot tub!
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Middlezoy
The Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve (TA5 2AQ) is just 8 miles from Middlezoy and covers 2,564 hectares of mudflats, saltmarsh and reed beds. It's home to thousands of wading birds and waterfowl. Bring binoculars! One visitor told me they spotted 27 different bird species in a single morning visit.
The Avalon Marshes (BA6 9TT) combine four nature reserves across 1,500 hectares of wetlands. You can spot otters, water voles and rare birds including bitterns. The visitor centre has maps of walking routes. A TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: "Saw more wildlife in one day than I've seen all year. The hides are well-positioned and the paths well-maintained."
Holy Cross Church in Middlezoy itself is worth popping into. The 15th-century building has fascinating carvings including a famous 'Sheela-na-gig' figure that's quite unusual for an English church. It's typically open during daylight hours. A visitor commented: "The medieval carvings are extraordinary - I've never seen anything like them in other parish churches."
Is Middlezoy good for families with young children?
Yes! There's a good playground in the village and nearby attractions like Animal Farm Adventure Park (TA9 3PX) and the Willow and Wetlands Centre offer child-friendly activities. Many cottages with hot tubs have enclosed gardens too, which is handy for little ones.
What's the best time of year to visit Middlezoy?
Each season has its charm. Winter brings spectacular starling murmurations, spring offers wildflowers and newborn lambs, summer is perfect for exploring and autumn brings beautiful colours to the landscape. That hot tub will be welcome whatever the weather!
Are there any good pubs in walking distance?
The King Alfred Inn in Middlezoy serves good pub grub and local ales. It's within walking distance of most cottages in the village. They do a popular Sunday roast, but booking ahead is recommended.
Can I go fishing near Middlezoy?
Yes, the drainage channels of the Somerset Levels offer good coarse fishing. You'll need an Environment Agency rod licence and some stretches require permits from local angling clubs. King's Sedgemoor Drain is particularly popular.
Is there public transport in Middlezoy?
There's limited bus service connecting to Bridgwater (service 16), but having a car is recommended to make the most of your stay. Most attractions are a short drive away rather than walkable.
What should I pack for a hot tub cottage break in Middlezoy?
Besides swimwear for the hot tub, bring walking boots or wellies as the Somerset Levels can be muddy. Binoculars are useful for wildlife spotting and a torch is handy for country lanes at night.
